End of Term

Wowie, time has flown since our last post. We have all been busy doing one thing or another! We’re going to now post a highlights package to show you what we’ve been up to since our last post.

Lots and lots of science experiments

Air

This week our science focus has been ‘air’

On Monday we made balloon rockets

On Tuesday we discovered air pressure with balloons, ping pong balls and hair dryers:

Today we did an experiment about air pressure.  We had a balloon, sticky tape, string, two ping pong balls and a hair dryer.  First we stuck two ping pong balls to string and the stuck them hanging to the desk and got a straw and blew in between the balls.  The balls stuck together.  They did this because there was no air in between the ping pong balls and the air presure from the outside pushed them together.

Next we put a ping pong ball on top of the hair dryer and it floated.  The hair dryer was pushing the ball up and the air pressure was pushing the ball down. The ping pong ball floated.

On Wednesday we had paper aeroplane races and made helicopters:

Air pressure makes aeroplanes fly.  Paper aeroplanes with big wings and paperclips on their noses fly the best.

Bush Trip

Last week we went on a bush trip to the swamp.  We went looking for animals, played footy, explored the swamp and cooked damper.  We’re going to use our bush trip as a starting place for our Alyawarr language lessons.  The kids took some photos and made some movies for you to enjoy!

Busy day for the teachers at Murray Downs

Today we had a planning day for our Indigenous Language and Culture program.  The Murray Downs Teachers Elicia, Nathan, Jeffrey, Sharon, Lawrence and Pam worked with ladies from the community and 2 linguists, Susan Moore and Sally Dixon.  We came up with a wonderful term plan which ensures that we will have Alyawarr language and culture education as an important part of our teaching and learning.

We’re starting our culture program on Monday with a trip up the road to the swamp.  We might see some back swans, ducks and echidnas!

Here are our award winners for this week.

Volcanoes!

Today was a busy day at Murray Downs School.  The dentist visited Ali Curung clinic (which is about 30 minutes drive away) so some kids from Murray Downs were taken by Jeffrey in the school troopie to the Ali Curung clinic. We also had a nurse at school giving us check ups on our eyes.  On top of that we conducted another experiment-we made baking soda volcanoes!

First we made made a mountain around our bottle. Then we poured vinegar, red food colouring and dish washing liquid into the bottle.  Lastly we put a teaspoon of baking soda into our bottle.  All of the ingredients reacted and red lava poured out of the mountain!  It was like a volcanic eruption!

We discovered that the vinegar and baking react together they produce carbon dioxide gas! Carbon dioxide is produced in a real volcano!

Science at Murray Downs School

Hi!

This term we’re learning to be scientists with our unit ‘Tuning into change’.  We’re going to do a science experiment every morning and writing about it in our literacy session.

For our first experiment we investigated what happens when you mix diet coke and mentos.

science mentos and coke 056

Diet coke explosion!

Diet coke explosion!

When we put the mentos in the diet coke the carbon dioxide came out.  The gas was stuck on the mentos and it made millions of bubbles.  Jacob

Today we did an experiment with diet coke and it exploded! The diet coke did not have any more fizz after we finished the experiment.  We drank it but it tasted flat.  The diet coke had no more gas.  The bottle was full before the experiment but after it exploded the was only half left.  Chontelle
First we got a bottle of diet coke and we got some string and we got four mentos and we made a hole in the mentos and the lid and put the string through them.  We dropped the mentos into the diet coke. The diet coke exploded. Tyras

We’re looking forward to a term FULL of science!!
